USB modem and Router:
Tata Photon plus comes in two variants. USB modem type and Router. USB modem type is the preferred choice for Laptop and Desktop users. Wireless router is best suited for small organizations or those who want to access internet from multiple computers at the sametime. In order to use the wireless router, you must have wireless Dong in case of desktop.
Installation
Installation of Photon Plus is very simple. The USB modem comes with the necessary installation drivers and dialer software and it will install automatically on the first plug. For further connection, all you have to do is execute the dialer the software using the desktop or startmenu shortcuts.
Upload and Download Speeds
We were actually surprised with the speed. We got an average download speed of 1.5 Mb/s and Upload speed of 0.44 Mb/s on a regular basis. 25 MB of data file took me 3.10 minutes to download and 4.9 MB music file took 2.45 minutes to upload. Infact we tried downloading the beta version of upcoming Microsoft’s Operating system, which is of 2.36 GB, took 5 hrs approximately. However the connection speed is completely depending on multiple factors like the accessing area’s distance from the tower, time of the day, number of simultaneous users. Also make a note that the 3.1 Mbps download speed claimed by any service providers including Tata Photon Plus is the burst speed and is the maximum speed one can reach at the ideal conditions. So be happy if you are getting the download speed of 1.5 Mbps.

Plans and Tariffs
Tata Indicom USB photon device comes at a cost of Rs. 3500. This charges includes the USB modem charges and the installation. Tata Indicom has more plan options than the competitors, however the absence of any unlimited plan actually restricts power users to move for Hi-Speed broadband. Photon Plus starts from Rs. 250 and extends upto Rs. 1500. Photon plus has both Time bound and Data bound plan options. Rs. 1500 plan allows upto 15 GB of upload + download and yes, it is the maximum.
Network coverage
Tata Photon+ is currently avalilable selected cities in India (Delhi, Patna, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Jodhpur, Jaipur, Dehradhun, Shimla & the circles of J & K, Assam & NESA States). On all other parts, the device will automatically switch to CDMA 1X connection and will offer 144 kbps speed. Tata Indicom has to increase the High speed availability areas as they are currently covering very less areas when compared to the competitors.
Verdict
Tata Indicom Photon Plus offers an excellent broadband speed. It covers major cities in India and the speeds are steady while on the move too. Tata Indicom has to aggressively expand and increase the coverage regions. Also, Watching streaming videos, Browsing rich websites and Downloading in seconds are the major priority for any power user to switch to High speed broadband service. Currently Photon plus is not offering any unlimited plan and the plans are very costly when compared to the fixed line connectivity. We hope Tata Indicom will come up with more interesting plans to give a tough edge to the competitors.

Reliance Netconnect Wireless broadband

Mobile Wireless broadband is finally here in India and I am happy to say that it works, I had purchased the Reliance Netconnect Broadband plus data Card for mobile broadband, this connection provides a peak theoretical speed of 3.1 Mbps when you are connected to the the Reliance High speed (HSD) network available in 35 major cities across India and if the high speed network is not present it falls back to the slower CDMAx1 network which works in over 20,000 towns and 4.5 lakhs villages.
Broadband + USB Modems Reliance is providing two USB models for this broadband + service, one is EC168C from Huawei and the other ZTE AC871 currently both the modems cost Rs 3,500, if you get an option opt for the Huawei as its sleek looking and can also be used as a USB data stick by adding Micro SD card.

Technology
Basically this wireless connection uses the EVDO (Rev A) technology for the high speed broadband service, which is basically a type of broadband service for CDMA network which can provide speeds upto 3.1 Mbps and if the EVDO service is not present the modem will it will fall back and connect to the old slower
CDMA 1x network.

The USB Modem and its package

The Huawei USB Reliance broadband + is provided in a sleek package it actually looks like and DVD box.
The package contains the USB modem, usb cable, Driver CD (not required for installation), product manual and warranty card, the build quality of the USB modem is very good it looks sturdy and also attractive.
Installation
Reliance has made these modem plug ‘n’ play so you do not need to load the CD to install the drivers, just plug it in an empty USB 2.0 slot an it installs the required drivers and dialer software, It worked without any problems on my Mac (iMac), Windows 7 (HP laptop) and Windows Vista, do note that when you first get the connection you need to activate it on one computer and I suggest you use and windows machine to do the same (forget the activation thing if the Reliance Webworld guys have done it, you just need to do it once by dialing *228 in the activation tab).

Airtel Wireless Internet

Airtel has always been into the competition with different telecom service providers and this the reason they are offering Data Cards for wireless internet services using GPRS enabled cards with sending/recieving SMS facility.
Not only that these Data Cards are compatible with Windows 2000/XP/XP Tablet/XP Pro but also with Mac Operating systems like Mac OSX, Leopard & Tiger, unlike Reliance Data Cards which are officially not compatible with the Mac based operating systems and the users have to go for different tricks and setup options to get wireless internet on mac based systems.
In order to use this Data Card you need a laptop with PCMCIA slot which generally is available in most laptop brands , though iam unable to find it in my sony vaio laptop, may be this slot is not available in all the laptop models.

MTS wireless internet.

MTS India, is the Indian arm of MTS (a JV between India’s Shyam Teleservices), the largest mobile service provider in Russia. As we introduced a few weeks ago about the launch of MTS mobile services in Karnataka state, we’ll now see how MTS functions in providing data services, which is now becoming as vital as the basic communication service.
MTS India has 2 types of Internet services, one MBlaze which works on EVDO and other MBrowse which works on CDMA network.

The premium MBlaze data card is priced at Rs.3499 and the standard MBlaze data card at Rs.2999, the only difference between the two being the storage space provided in premium version (just like a USB stick).
The plans in MBlaze are, I have to say, comparable with the best in the Industry now. Now when I say best in the Industry, I mean Tata Photon plus which leads all the way. As always the EVDO speeds will be up to 3.1 mbps and the upload speeds will be up to 1.8 mbps.
The plans start from as low as Rs.198 per month, which gives 150MB.
MBlaze half gives 0.5GB of data at Rs.498/month
MBlaze 1 – 1GB – Rs.598/month
MBlaze 3 – 3GB – Rs.798/month
MBlaze 5 – 5GB – Rs.898/month
MBlaze 10 – 10GB – Rs.1200/month
MBlaze 15 – 15GB – Rs.1500/month
MBlaze 30 – 30GB – Rs.3000/month
MBlaze 50 – 50GB – Rs.5000/month
Any extra usage will be charged at 50ps/MB and extra usage outside the validity period will be charged at Rs.2/MB.

BSNL Wireless Internet Services

BSNL is going to start offering wireless internet services in India with the launch of EVDO Data Cards. BSNL has the lowest downtime when compared to any other broadband service providers hence its very much recommended to cancel your other wireless broadband services and get a Network Interface Card (NIC) or EVDO Card which offers speeds upto 2.4Mbps.

The Data card is available at a cost of 2800Rs from BSNL or costs you 150Rs/month when you rent it and the minimum rental period is 3 months. You can also make calls to other mobile/land line phones and you will be charged with the normal pulse rate basis.
If you compare other wireless internet service providers like Tata Indicom Plug 2 surf, Wimax, Reliance Netconnect they charge their customers around 1500Rs for unlimited internet plan and BSNL charges 400Rs for the same services and no other company offers you Data Cards on rental basis other than BSNL. BSNL is also known for the highest telecom networks because of their highest number of towers, this is the reason you can stay connected even if you are travelling in the most remote places.
The EVDO is not yet officially launched by BSNL and its hoped that this July BSNL will be offering the data cards for sale/lease at these ultimately low prices. The speed of this broadband service would be around 120kbps but for sure a consistent speed. These Data Cards are specifically designed for laptops and hence its not recommended to try to connected them to your PC computers. The data card supports voice calls and also offers you a feature to send/recieve SMS messages.
Total Charges for EVDO BSNL Wireless Internet :Initial Deposit – 1500RsEVDO Device Cost – 7500RsTariff : 250Rs/month if you have purchased the deviceTariff : 600Rs/month if you have rented the device
You can contact BSNL customer care for more information on these Data Cards at their toll free number : 1500 or BSNL telephone exchange / Commercial office / DGM office in your locality.

Vodafone wireless Internet connection

Many of you are already using internet connection on your laptops using wireless data cards and mobile phones.

Vodafone Mobile Connect USB Stick does look sleep along with a cool pen drive shape and connection through the Vodafone EDGE network which means that this is a high-speed internet connection. You dont need a CD to install this device because its a total plug & play product.
Unlike other Data Card based internet services, this is something different because in this case you will need a Vodafone SIM card to connect to the internet and this SIM card you need to insert into the USB Stick.
Once you insert the Vodafone SIM card in this USB Stick you need to connect it to your PC or Laptop for connecting to the internet. The USB Stick is indentified and it will start working instantly, connecting to the web using your Sim Card.
Pricing :The USB Stick Device seems to be a bit overpriced at 2999Rs, but the internet is charged on a monthly rental based on the data downloaded. There are two plans ie 499Rs & 699Rs Plan.499Rs Plan – 500Mb Free Data Usage + 5p/10KB Usage Charges699Rs Plan – 1Gb Free Data Usage + 5p/10KB Usage Charges
